Comprehensive Understanding of Tag-Along Trailers

Tag-along trailers are hauling trailers that are towed behind a second vehicle connected via a hitch setup. The key feature of tag-along trailers is they lack a separate front axle, so the weight of the towed load is not distributed over the front of the towing trailer.

Tag-along trailers can be open on top or have a covering. Open tag-along trailers are ideal for moving large pieces of machinery and equipment that might have awkward dimensions. Covered trailers are ideal for moving large loads that need protection from the elements.

Most tag-along trailers have a road clearance between 24 and 48 inches. Most modern tag-along trailers connect using a pintle hitch setup or a bumper hitch setup.

Essential Features of Tag-Along Trailers

When you are on the market for tag-along trailers, make sure you think about the following considerations.

  • Axle placement: Trailers with different axles have different load distributions.
  • Capacity: Capacity is the total weight the trailer can haul.
  • Deck height: The deck height is how high the base of the trailer is from the ground
  • Tongue length: Tongue length refers to the distance between the trailer and the towing vehicle’s bumper.
  • Loading ramp: Some trailers have loading ramps to help load and unload hauls.
  • Suspension type: The most common suspension systems for tag-along trailers are leaf spring suspension and torsion axle suspension.
  • Length & width: Your trailer needs to be long enough and wide enough to comfortably place loads without shifting and moving when in transit.

The Benefits of Investing in Tag-Along Trailer

The main tag-along trailer advantages relate to their simplicity and all-around towing ability.

Versatility

Tag-along trailers are incredibly versatile and can handle a wide range of loads. Simple design and hitch mechanisms allow them to attach to most standard towing vehicles, including SUVs, pickup trucks, motorhomes, and more. Most tag-along trailers also incorporate loading ramps, which make it easy to load and unload hauls of any dimensions, Tag-along trailers come in several sizes and capacities, so you won’t have much trouble finding a match.

Cost-Effectiveness

Tag-along trailers are among the more cost-effective trailer options and are cheaper than equivalent gooseneck trailers. Tag-along trailers will quickly pay for themselves in virtue of their durability and low maintenance/repair requirements.

Selecting the Perfect Tag-Along Trailer for Your Needs

The right tag-along trailer will have a weight capacity, deck height, and axle distribution suitable for your needs. The toughest and most durable tag-along trailers feature durable pure steel frames with high-grade sealed plywood flooring.
